Health Begins at Home Part 1: Reduce, Recycle?
Nov 11, 2024Each new year prompts a collective desire for tidiness, decluttering, and creating space for the new. Whether inspired by Marie Kondo or the minimalist movement, the focus often turns to the home. Yet, this journey is not just about simplifying but also about considering the environmental impact of our choices.
In the Cayman Islands, the landfill served as a stark reminder of our collective waste. Now, as I embark on this mindful living journey, the emphasis is on reducing what enters our home. Careful label scrutiny at the point of purchase is the first step. Creating an entry space to address dirt and toxins prevents them from permeating the home. The process extends to reusing items, supporting local recycling initiatives, and ultimately influencing the manufacturing stage for a full-cycle approach. While perfection is elusive, collective small efforts can yield significantly more change then only a few people doing alot.
We also need to make changes within our sphere of influence and creation. An Architect taking responsibility for the materials in construction, a product designer taking responsibility for what they create, package and what happens at the end of the life. What is within your sphere of influence and impact without just thinking of offsetting somewhere else. A download guide is being created to help you think through these questions from a personal to corporate level.
